Worcestershire Psychologist – Dr Sophie Newman

Help when you need it in Worcestershire, West Midlands & Birmingham

Welcome to my Worcestershire Psychologist website. I am Dr Sophie Newman and I am here to help you. With over 16 years of experience as a Clinical Psychologist, I have helped many people overcome struggles with their mental health.

Life can be challenging at times and sometimes relying on support from family and friends may not be enough.  If you live in Worcestershire or the West Midlands and are finding it difficult to cope, you may find it helpful to talk to a professional. I regularly work with clients to tackle difficulties including depression, anxiety disorders such as panic, phobias and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma (including childhood sexual abuse), low self-esteem, bereavement and anger.

You will find I am approachable, warm and caring. If you are struggling with symptoms such as depression or anxiety, you will want to access psychological therapy without delay.  One in four people in the UK is likely to experience a mental health problem each year.  Working in independent practice means I am able to offer help, support and therapy without a long wait, allowing you to start the process of recovery now.  Please do not suffer alone, get in touch today.

I am an integrative therapist, meaning I draw on a number of approaches in order to tailor therapy specifically to your needs. I am also available at two convenient locations in Droitwich Spa and Stourport on Severn easily accessible for clients from Worcestershire and The West Midlands.

Anxiety & Depression

If you need help with anxiety or depression and you live in Worcestershire or the West Midlands you are in just the right place. One of the most common tools I use to help is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT is an evidence based treatment founded on the recognition that thoughts, feelings and behaviour are closely related.  For example, if you think a particular situation is going to be frightening, you are likely to feel anxious and you may therefore avoid it all together. CBT can help change both our feelings and our behaviour.  Originally developed as a treatment for depression it has since proven to be highly effective in treating many other problems such as anxiety disorders, panic and obsessive-compulsive disorder, anger and low self-esteem.

Find Peace of Mind

I am delighted to have undertaken specialist training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).  This is recognised as one of the treatments of choice for Post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD).  This therapy has also proven to be valuable in treating other difficulties involving trauma memories of some kind.  Unlike CBT, EMDR involves much less talking during treatment.  The therapy takes advantage of the minds ability to heal itself, just as the body does if we are physically hurt in some way.  Eye movements similar to those which occur during REM sleep are recreated during treatment. These eye movements are used during a treatment session until the memory becomes less disturbing and reduces the distressing emotions.

What my clients have to say about me

” I just wanted to say a massive thank you for all the help you have given me and the techniques you have taught me.  Everyone has noticed a huge difference in me and I’ve noticed a huge change in myself since starting therapy.  I’m feeling really good about myself and the techniques you taught me really helped when I went back to rugby training and started socialising again.”

‘I have just returned from our family holiday and just wanted to thank you for your help. Something I couldn’t have imagined doing six months ago. I went on the ferry and thrill rides and all without fearing for mine or my family’s lives. I have used the skills and coping mechanisms that you taught me and it has truly changed my life. I realise that there may be times when anxiety may return but I’m not afraid of it anymore.’

Thank you again.

” I found the sessions that I had with Sophie incredibly helpful. She was just what I needed at a particularly low point in life. Suffering from depression can be a desperate feeling; Sophie’s manner and the techniques she suggested were the ladders I needed to get myself out of the pit I felt I was in. Ongoing the CBT has helped me to change my view of myself. I would not hesitate to recommend Sophie’s sessions. ”

” Sophie is a caring psychologist who listened attentively to me during my therapy sessions. She has a relaxed and comforting demeanour which puts you at ease when discussing personal problems. Her open-mindedness and willingness to work together & non-judgemental approach enabled me to gain insight and explore various solutions. The session itself provided therapeutic relief, as did her advice and resources from it.”

” Sophie has been a huge support to me over the last few months. Therapy has always been a very professional yet personalised experience. Sophie creates a safe and calm environment in which I have felt comfortable and confident enough to share difficult experiences. She has always been both understanding and patient throughout this process. During therapy, I have been able to practise strategies to cope with anxiety and depression which have definitely helped me to live a much happier life.”

” I had been somewhat dismissive of the value of therapeutic intervention by a Clinical Psychologist and could not see how they could help. After some persuasion from my GP, I booked some sessions with Sophie; I am so glad that I did. The therapy has been effective and appears to have had lasting benefits despite only needing a relatively few sessions. Sophie is an excellent therapist, professional, kind, supportive, practical and effective. She adapted her approach to meet my needs, making the experience positive and effective. Sophie was very accommodating in terms of appointment times and venues to make it as easy as possible for me to attend appointments. I would warmly recommend Sophie as a therapeutic Clinical Psychologist.”

” I have found coping with life very difficult at times and often felt lost or invisible to the rest of the world, my family included. Meeting with Sophie, has helped me to re-evaluate and find positives in situations that I would previously have been blind to. She is a calming base line to me personally and is very understanding.
I always feel better about myself after our sessions, than beforehand ”
